The other day I was looking through my old recipe box from the late 1990’s/early 2000’s, and found a recipe card that my daughter had written for homemade Taco Seasoning. I had totally forgotten about this recipe. Based on the handwriting, I would guess that she wrote this card when she was middle school or high school… so I think this recipe is at least 15 years old.

I generally save my spice bottles to reuse for the spice blends that I make for different recipes. Normally, I’m lazy about labeling them, and either just tape a note on the bottle, write directly on the bottle… or not label it at all and hope that I remember what is in there- lol. However, tonight I decided it would be fun to use my Cricut to make a label for the bottle. I’ve had the Cricut for at least 3 years now, and have used it embarrassingly little (maybe 5 times so far). It was super fast and easy, and looks so much better on the spice rack with a sticker label… or any label, for that matter.

Taco Seasoning is a go-to spice that I used so often that I like to keep some in my spice rack. Tonight I wanted to make a batch of Walnut Taco Meat, and realized my bottle was empty. I do have another Taco Seasoning recipe that I have been using for the couple of years, but I thought I would try this spice blend recipe as a change. It has a teaspoon of sugar listed in the ingredients which surprised me (we generally try to avoid unnecessary sugar). I did make it with a little of the sugar today to keep true to the recipe as written, and it was very good. However, I didn’t feel like the sugar was really necessary; it could definitely be optional if you want to leave it out. Also, if you like a little heat in taco seasoning, a 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes would be a good addition.

Taco Seasoning 2
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
- 2 teaspoons Onion Powder (or Onion Granules)
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder (or Garlic Granules)
- 1 teaspoon Ground Oregano
- 1 teaspoon Paprika
- 1 teaspoon Granulated Sugar (optional)
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- ¼ teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl or jar, combine all seasonings together.
- Store in an airtight container.
- Use immediately or store for up to 1 year.
- The full recipe will equal 1 seasoning packet that you would buy at the grocery store.
Notes
- American-style chili powder is a blend of spices, and the spices used vary by brand. Use whichever chili powder that you like the taste of best.
- This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled, and stored in a jar for up to a year (spices will lose flavor potency after about a year, though).
- I like to use Onion Granules & Garlic Granules rather than Powders of those 2 spices. It’s just a personal preference; granules are not ground quite as fine as powders.
- A double batch is in my spice jar in the pictures above.
