How to make: Taco Seasoning

A few months ago, we found vegan jackfruit crumbles from Jack and Annie’s that we love- it’s the best vegan crumbles that we’ve found so far (and the least processed, too…since it’s made from jackfruit instead of soy protein isolate). This prompted us to start having “Taco Tuesdays” dinners because it’s such a quick & easy weeknight meal. It’s great for those days that I really don’t feel like actually cooking dinner after work. We just dice a tomato, shred some romaine lettuce, and add the spiced crumbles into a couple of taco shells. And we also pair it with a vegetable smoothie that I make in the Vitamix, of course. 😋

We originally bought a packaged taco seasoning from the grocery store to season the crumbles. Unfortunately, we realized the packaged taco seasonings just have WAYYYYY too much salt in them for us, though. I’m never sure why the American food industry equates ‘flavor’ with salt and sugar. We decided that we would be better off making our own taco seasoning so that we could control the sodium.

I googled a few taco seasoning recipes and came up with one that works for us. It’s so quick and easy to mix together, and will last for at least a year in a covered container. I usually make mine in a small bowl, and then transfer it to a spice container using a funnel.

This recipe can also be easily doubled or tripled so that you have plenty on hand to use in recipes.

Taco Seasoning

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika (regular or smoked paprika, depending on taste preference)
  • ½ teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • ½ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Fine Sea Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes

Instructions

  • Combine all seasonings together and store in an airtight container.
  • Use immediately or store for up to 1 year.
  • The full recipe will equal 1 seasoning packet that you would buy at the grocery store.

Notes

Note:
  • I use 2 teaspoons of the seasoning mix to season 5 oz of vegan jackfruit crumbles.
  • I add 3-4 tablespoons of low-sodium vegetable broth or water to the crumbles after I put in the taco seasoning, and simmer until the broth evaporates.
  • American-style chili powder is a blend of spices, and the spices used vary by brand.  Use whichever chili powder that you like the taste of best.
  • Recipe can easily be double or tripled, etc and stored in a jar for up to a year (spices will lose flavor potency after a year, though).
